Mama says that people don't notice the little things enough. Daddy did- he always knew when Mama put fresh-cut flowers out, or when she bought a blue-checkered tablecloth for dinner. He always saw the first trickle of sunshine peeping out from behind a cloud in spring.

Daddy died last year when he was really sick. I was sitting with him just before he left.
"Ellie?" he'd said, squeezing my hand tight. "Make sure that you feel the butterfly kisses for me."
That was the last thing he said. It made Mama cry. Daddy always called the little things butterfly kisses. I guess it's because a butterfly kiss would be so small and soft, you wouldn't notice it. I used to think it was silly, but now that I'm a big girl, I know butterfly kisses are the most important things in the whole world. 'Cause I've been kissed by one.
