The Smoking Room
Men sit twirling caterpillars
on their upper lip,
proud of the dark lengths
they can wrap around their fingers
to uncoil for hours.

I might lounge there with a pipe
and gaze
through drifting greys
as the weaving progresses.

Light refracted through the lazy mist
rebounds off mammoth leather chairs
where whole generations have sunk
never to be seen again.

Badger-men scratch their whiskers
dislodging ecosystems;
every strand accounted for.
